Description

Society of Women Engineers Exploring Technology (SWEET)

The San Diego Professional Section of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE-San Diego) is hosting an exciting opportunity for middle school girls to learn about science and technology careers. The annual program, Society of Women Engineers Exploring Technology (SWEET), features five exciting science-based activities where the girls will learn to think like an engineer in a hands-on environment. Girls will interact with local collegiate and professional engineers on a panel, while learning about how we model engineering on natural systems and how engineering impacts the world around them. Girls will also learn about other STEM outreach opportunities, including SWE Next, which is a way to become part of the Society of Women Engineers as a student through the ages of 13-18.

This year's theme is 'Dare to be a Force of Nature' and explores how engineers can utilize nature as a model for solving engineering problems, in addition to discovering how engineering can help keep our planet healthy!

We also are offering (for the first time!) a high school component to SWEET. The event will run similarly to the middle school girls, but with slightly more technically demanding activities and longer activity times for the high school girls. We only have 50 spots available so buy your tickets fast because they will run out quickly!

Parent & Educator Program (PEP)

While the girls are actively engaged in the SWEET program, their adult influencers are given the opportunity to attend a parallel program, called the SWEET Parent and Educators Program (PEP). This is an educational program for parents and educators that will help sustain the girls’ STEM interests long after the activity day is over. The workshop features information on the following:

-"How to Prepare" for high school and college admissions

-A live panel of professionals in STEM fields

-Resources for fun interactive engineering projects that can be done at home

-Resources to find other exciting programs available in San Diego to further explore engineering

-Information on breaking the stereotypes normally associated with the jobs and professionals in STEM fields.

Teachers, parents, and anyone who works with girls are welcome! CEU credits available upon registration.
